What is a BVLOS rating?
A Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) rating for a Remote Pilot License (RPL) allows a drone pilot to operate their drone beyond the range of their visual line of sight. This means that the pilot can fly the drone at a greater distance from their location, which can be useful for a variety of purposes such as mapping, surveillance, and inspection.
Course Duration:
Theory – 3 Days
Course Completion – 1-2 Weeks (Estimated)
This course consists of three phases:
Theory Course
Flight Training
Skills Test
1. Theory Course
This course covers all aviation-related subjects required to provide you with sufficient knowledge and a good understanding to pass your BVLOS theory exam.
The course is divided into different modules with linear progression.
Once all the modules have been completed, you will proceed to the Final Exam.
The Final Exam needs to be written at our office (Approved CAA Exam Centre) or an Approved CAA Exam Centre near you (Contact Us to find an Approved CAA Exam Centre near you)
Once you have passed the exam, you will be able to download your Theory Course Certificate. Afterward, your Simulated Flight Training will commence, and one of our instructors will arrange your Flight Training dates.
Please note that an additional fee will be charged when exceeding more than 1 re-attempt on your final exam.
2. Flight Training
20 Hours Simulated Flight Training
To obtain a BVLOS rating for an RPL, the pilot must undergo additional training and demonstrate their ability to operate the drone safely and effectively beyond their visual line of sight. This training typically includes topics such as risk management, communication procedures, and advanced flight planning.
Additionally, the pilot may be required to demonstrate their ability to operate the drone in a variety of scenarios, including in different weather conditions, over varied terrain, and in congested areas. Once the pilot has completed the necessary training and demonstrated their competence, they will receive a BVLOS rating, which will allow them to legally operate their drone beyond their visual line of sight.
3. Skills Test
The skills test is conducted by an approved CAA designated examiner (DRE). The skills test consists of two parts: a ground evaluation and a practical flying part. During the ground evaluation, the designated examiner will test your theoretical knowledge, and during the practical flying, your flying abilities will be tested. You need to successfully complete both parts to be issued a BVLOS Rating.
