What is an Instructor rating?
An Instructor Rating is an advanced certification allowing a qualified Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) holder to legally teach, train, and certify new drone pilots at an approved training organization. It involves mastering instructional techniques, “patter” (verbalizing flight maneuvers), and passing theory and practical exams to mentor others.
Course Duration:
Theory – 5 Days
Course Completion – 4 Weeks (Estimated)
This course consists of three phases:
Theory Course
Flight Training (Patter)
Skills Test
1. Theory Course
This course covers all aviation-related subjects required to provide you with sufficient knowledge and a good understanding to pass your Instructor theory exam.
The course is divided into different modules with linear progression.
Once all the modules have been completed (online class), you will proceed to the Final Exam.
The Final Exam needs to be written at our office (Approved CAA Exam Centre) or an Approved CAA Exam Centre near you (Contact Us to find an Approved CAA Exam Centre near you)
Once you have passed the exam, you will receive your Theory Course Certificate. Afterward, your Flight Training will commence, and one of our instructors will arrange your Flight Training dates.
Please note that an additional fee will be charged when exceeding more than 1 re-attempt on your final exam.
2. Flight Training
3 Hours Flight Training (Patter)
To obtain a Instructor rating, the pilot must undergo additional training and demonstrate their ability to operate the drone safely and effectively and teach this to a student in a comprehensive manner. This training typically includes topics such as risk management, communication procedures, and advanced flight planning.
Additionally, the pilot may be required to demonstrate their ability to operate the drone in a variety of scenarios, including in different weather conditions, over varied terrain, and in congested areas. Once the pilot has completed the necessary training and demonstrated their competence, they will receive a Instructor rating, which will allow them to legally provide instruction under an ATO.
3. Skills Test
The skills test is conducted by an approved SACAA designated examiner (DRE). The skills test consists of two parts: a ground evaluation and a practical flying part. During the ground evaluation, the designated examiner will test your theoretical knowledge on a lesson plan, and during the practical flying, your flying and teaching abilities will be tested. You need to successfully complete both parts to be issued a Instructor Rating.
SACAA Requirements – Please note that you are responsible for obtaining the following before or during your Instructor Rating training:
Valid RPC
Valid Aviation Medical Class III
